Standard 7: Teachers are able to plan different kinds of lessons.
The teacher organizes and plans systematic instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, pupils, the community, and curriculum goals.

Rationale: Part of the freshmen geography curriculum is to learn about the culture of Western Europe. For a personal understanding of cultural differences, I paired up my students with French PenPals to share aspects of their daily lives to better understand the similarities and differences between our cultures. In an assignment designed to encourage my students to highlight what they believed to be “typical American activities,” they were instructed to create a movie about some aspect of American culture. The lesson plan that describes this assignment was created for EDT 674 “Learning with Technology” since my students used video cameras, digital cameras, Microsoft MovieMaker, Microsoft PhotoStory, digital voice recorders, and other technological components to create their final projects. Also attached are a few example of videos created for this assignment or you can view them on my school website.
As an educator I challenge myself to create new and different lesson plans for my students, varying instruction styles and activities that incorporate knowledge of the subject matter with the ability level and competencies of my students. With this activity I also pulled in the expertise of a UW-Oshkosh intern we had at our disposal in my district named Lindsey. I think the students benefitted tremendously from this activity as they were challenged in the use of the technology while having two educators to assist with the frustrations that can come up while trying to create a beautiful finished product like these videos.

Congress Wiki (created access for you under your email for Marian)
Rationale: To motivate students in my freshmen government class, instead of just learning about how bills are passed through Congress, our students write their own bills and simulate Congress. They join committees based on their interests and in conjunction with their peers they create bills to debate in sessions of Congress. The students use a wiki to communicate ideas on bills, peer edit resolutions, and check out what has been created by other committees as can be seen on the Congress Wikiwe created.
The students interact socially in a positive environment on the wiki, giving feedback, suggestions for approval, and supportive compliments to each other as comments on the pages. Clearly they are actively engaged in learning and the increased motivation for our sessions of Congress is demonstrated by the participation level of the students. As a professional educator I have been energized by the results I’ve seen from the students in our simulations. When I check the wiki and see students checking it at 8am on a Saturday morning it makes me proud to be a teacher, engaging and motivating students in their learning. I find this method way more effective than lectures, note-taking, and reading from a textbook.

/ Gettysburg ExamplePhoto Story I created
Rationale: In my classroom I make it a point to vary instructional strategies whenever possible. One of the reasons I chose to become a high school social studies teacher is to break the stereotype of a boring, lecturing history teacher. The attached piece of evidence is a lesson plan and project sheet for my sophomore United States History students that I created in EDT 658. The activity involves creating a PhotoStory about a Civil War battle from the perspective of someone who lived at the time, creating a mock primary source. I have attached the example I created for the Battle of Gettysburg. Students are challenged to think critically, problem solve, collaborate and create a good finished product to present to the class. By varying instructional strategies both the students and I are challenged and motivated.

After the very successful first web conference I decided to conduct two more as part of my action research project. I truly believe the experiences have helped me to grow as an educator, developing connections with agencies like these museums in the community and becoming more comfortable using web conferencing technology with my students. They also benefitted from the experience as web conferencing is becoming more common in the business world and at some institutions of higher learning. The experience itself was enriching and the students gained knowledge I would not have been able to provide.

My students have learned a tremendous amount more this year as they have exchanged almost three times as many emails as the students did last year with the "snail mail" letters. And it hasn't cost any money! With great results like this I am encouraged to continue reflecting on my lesson plans, finding ways to improve them through the integration of technology and increasing the rigor and relevance for my students.
