Evidence: Improving a lesson using technology (EDT 650) BraheLessonPlan PowerPoint

Rationale: As a teacher I am committed to creating new and exciting lessons for my students, continuously changing and expanding my lessons to improve their learning experience. I created the attached PowerPoint as a piece of evidence from EDT 650, Foundations of Educational Technology. The PowerPoint was presented to the class to show how I had reflected upon and improved an ongoing lesson for my students concerning emailing PenPals in France. After evaluating the amount of time and money spent sending letters back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean, I decided to alter my lesson to use the ePals email service to promote quick and free exchanges between "KeyPals". I've further improved the lesson this year to pair up my freshmen geography students with KeyPals in Romania whom they write emails every other week on pre-arranged topics.

My students have learned a tremendous amount more this year as they have exchanged almost three times as many emails as the students did last year with the "snail mail" letters. And it hasn't cost any money! With great results like this I am encouraged to continue reflecting on my lesson plans, finding ways to improve them through the integration of technology and increasing the rigor and relevance for my students.

KSD
9.K.3 The teacher is aware of major areas of research on teaching and other resources for professional learning (e.g. professional literature, colleagues, professional associations, professional development activities).
The website "Edutopia" and the magazine they publish are great sources for information, resources, and research. In Suzie Boss' blog (a post made on July 20th, 2008) she mentioned the educational benefits of the ePals service I used in this piece of evidence. I have also subscribed to various podcasts to increase my knowledge on how to improve educational experiences for my students.

9.S.4 The teacher draws upon professional colleagues within the school and other professional areas as supports for reflection, problem-solving and new ideas, actively sharing experiences and seeking and giving feedback.
The idea to use ePals to improve this lesson plan came as a result of discussing and reflecting on the PenPal experience with a colleague who suggested I speak with the Director of Technology about the ePals service. I also just started using the ePals Learning Space forum to discuss our plans for modernizing our high school with my colleagues and administration.

9.D.4 The teacher is committed to seeking out, developing, and continually refining practices that address the individual needs of students.
This experience proves my commitment to improving my lesson plans to the best of my ability, seeking out solutions to address the needs of my students, refining my lessons accordingly for the best outcome for all involved.
