Standard 6: Teachers communicate well.
The teacher uses effective verbal and nonverbal communication techniques as well as instructional media and technology to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.

Evidence: Podcast about Plagiarism Policy (see on my wiki found at WikiBrahe scroll down to #4, or on my homepage for Hortonville High School)

Rationale: Effective communication is essential in any classroom and teachers must master various modes of communication to best provide meaningful learning experiences. In order to be consistent in the delivery of my plagiarism policy I created an audio podcast using my iPod Touch and uploaded it to my wiki and classroom webpage. Students, as well as parents, can now hear a more detailed explanation of my plagiarism policy than the summary included in my syllabus. As I teach high school social studies it is important to emphasize the importance of citing sources and avoiding plagiarism to prepare students for the academic honesty policies and consequences of institutions of higher learning.

While creating this podcast I was able to experiment with audacity and the voice recording capabilities of my iPod Touch, learning quite a bit myself about the use of technology for communication.

KSD
6.K.4 The teacher recognizes the importance of nonverbal, verbal and media communication techniques.
The important media communication technique I utilized was an audio podcast that I created for my students to view on the classroom webpage, demonstrating how I value the importance of using various types of media for communication.

6.S.5 The teacher knows how to use a variety of media communication tools, including audiovisual aids and computers, to enrich learning opportunities.
The podcast was created using my iPod Touch to enrich my students learning experience and prepare them for the plagiarism policies of institutions of higher education. I have made it a point to vary my knowledge and skills in the areas of communication to be able to model these technologies for my students.

6.D.2 The teacher values many ways in which people seek to communicate and encourages many modes of communication in the classroom.
After the students listed to my audio podcast they used digital voice recorders to narrate a slideshow in Microsoft PhotoStory, creating their own media communications. If any of my students proposes a different way to follow through with the requirements of the project, I am always willing to adjust the mode if the outcome still fits the criteria. Student creativity should be encouraged, not stifled.
